Dublin, CA – SAT scores recently released by the California Department of Education show that most public high schools in the Tri-Valley continue to improve their effectiveness at preparing students for college. Dougherty Valley High School of San Ramon, CA jumped 68 points to score an impressive average of 1,791 on the SAT in 2010-2011. Foothill High School in Pleasanton, CA and Monte Vista High School in Danville, CA generated the second and third highest average scores with 1,773 and 1,772, respectively.

For the third year in a row, Dublin High School produced the lowest average SAT score in the Tri-Valley. This year’s score of 1,573 represents a 10 point drop from the prior year and a 34 point combined drop over the prior two years. Livermore High School (1,633) and Granada High School (1,640) in Livermore, CA rounded out the bottom three for 2010-2011.

“I am shocked at Dublin High’s low SAT scores,” said one Dublin parent. “The yearly promises of academic improvement at Dublin High by district officials and the board of trustees over the past six years have utterly failed to materialize. They should be embarrassed to repeat such empty promises ever again. They have lost all credibility with parents and can no longer expect us to be gullible enough to believe that next year is the year the improvements will magically occur.”

Dougherty Valley High School in San Ramon, CA was the most improved school with its whopping 68-point jump in 2010-2011. California High School in San Ramon, CA suffered the largest decrease for the year with a 15 point drop. California High School’s overall academic performance has continued to decline over the past few years as cross-town rival Dougherty Valley High School has attracted many high-performing students. Dublin High School, San Ramon Valley High School, and Monte Vista High School all sustained decreases in their average scores for 2010-2011.

“The remarkable performance of such a new school like Dougherty Valley High clearly demonstrates how a new public high school in East Dublin would quickly become a top-performing school that would attract thousands of new families to Dublin,” observed a Dublin parent. “How sad that the district continues to fight for the status quo to avoid admitting its failures.”

Excluding Dougherty Valley High School, which only has SAT scores for the past two years, the top-performing high school over the past six years has been Monte Vista High School with an average SAT score of 1,742. The worst performing school over the past six years has been Dublin High School with an average score of 1,590. Dublin High School remains the only Tri-Valley school to average below 1,600 over the past six years.

Perhaps the most alarming trend is the widening gap in percentage of college-eligible students among Dublin and Livermore high schools relative to the rest of the Tri-Valley. The percentage of Dublin High School, Livermore High School, and Granada High School students scoring an average of at least 1,500 was 33% for 2010-2011. As a comparison, the average percentage of college-eligible students for the rest of the Tri-Valley was 62%.

College admission requirements become more rigorous every year. Students who wish to set themselves apart with higher SAT scores may want to consider test-preparation services to supplement classroom instruction. Internet searches for the local area show that the Tri-Valley region has a plethora of SAT test-preparation services to choose from in order to provide students with the best chance possible for success.

Dublin schools superintendent Dr. Stephen Hanke and the Dublin school board trustees did not respond to Around Dublin Blog’s request for comment.
